で，ロケール設定とかとあわせて meta key (M-x とか)が
使えなくなるわけだが，emacs で meta key を扱えるようにするには

xterm:
metaSendsEscape (class MetaSendsEscape)
If ``true'', Meta characters (a character combined with the
Meta modifier key) are converted into a two-character sequence
with the character itself preceded by ESC. This applies as

rxvt:
meta8: boolean
True: handle Meta (Alt) + keypress to set the 8th bit. False:
handle Meta (Alt) + keypress as an escape prefix [default].

これでキー入力は esc + key になるけど cut&paste や kinput 経由の
日本語入力では，8bit 透過になり問題なく日本語入力できる．
