FreeBSD 5.4にてgdbが使用できません．

具体的には
$ gdb hoge
GNU gdb 6.1.1 [FreeBSD]

This GDB was configured as "i386-marcel-freebsd"...
(gdb) run
Starting program: /home/hogehoge/hoge
というところで止まります．

gdb 5.3でも試してみましたが同じ症状がでて使えませんでした．
どなたか解決方法をご存知の方教えていただけませんか？
